Trip to Australia October 2023 - Part 7 - Carrick Hill

Image
Carrick Hill is an historic house set in a 100-acre estate in the foothills of the Adelaide Hills.  There are spectacular views over the city of Adelaide and to the sea beyond.   Built in the 1930s, the property was built for their home by Sir Edward and Lady Ursula  Hayward.  It houses many treasures bought on their honeymoon in England from the now demolished Beaudesert Estate in Staffordshire.  Unfortunately, when my sister and I visited, the house was closed, but we were able to walk around the beautiful gardens and enjoy the fantastic views.    View of the city of Adelaide View to the sea A Litle Pied Cormorant This is Part 7 of my trip to Australia 2023 - for Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, see 'Archive' on the left panel.

Trip to Australia October 2023 - Part 6 - Urrbrae House

Image
Urrbrae House is a beautiful bluestone two-story mansion that replaced a large single-story house believed to have been constructed in 1846.    The estate was owned by Robert Forsyth Mcgeorge and acquired by Peter Waite in the mid-1870s, and his new mansion was completed in 1891.  Urrbrae was the name given by Robert Mcgeorge - Urr after his hometown in Scotland, and brae meaning a slope, or hillside.  On the death of Peter and Matilda Waite in 1922, the property was handed over to the University of Adelaide by their daughters. The garden which is full of roses traces the history and development of roses in the 10th Century and features roses from each decade.   The powerful scent of roses is apparent as soon as you walk among them.   I saw a couple of these metal information books which were fixed to the tables.   Bottle brush tree Some views taken from the balcony of the house.
