Derek Jarman's Garden, Dungeness

Image
Derek Jarman was an English film director, artist, author, and gardener.   He lived in a wood-clad cottage, Prospect Cottage, on the shingle shore at Dungeness.    In this unlikely environment, he made a world-famous garden.   The garden is not open to the public, nor is it private.  It is unenclosed and can be seen from the road. On one side of the cottage is a poem - too dark to photograph, but is John Donne's poem The Sun Rising Busy old fool, unruly Sun,  Why dost thou thus, Through windows, and through curtains, call on us ?  Must to thy motions lovers' seasons run ?  Saucy pedantic wretch, go chide  Late school-boys and sour prentices,  Go tell court-huntsmen that the king will ride,  Call country ants to harvest offices ; Love, all alike, no season knows nor clime, Nor hours, days, months, which are the rags of time.  In that the world's contracted thus ;  Thine age asks ease, and since thy duties be  To warm the world, that's done in warming us.  Shine her

Some views of Dungeness, Kent

I have wanted to visit Dungeness for several years now, and as we were staying just along the coast I persuaded Brian to come along as well.  He was not so impressed, but I loved it!   I will definitely want to visit again.  There is an RSPB and a nature Reserve nearby, so that might be a good place to visit as well. Enjoy the photo's but Warning - abandoned boat overload! Here you can see the Nuclear Power Station in background.    I had my back to it most of the time so was not really aware of it. I had thought I was the only person on the beach until I spotted this chap in the distance fishing I have some more photo's of Dungeness which I will post soon.
